— A One-of-a-Kind Japanese Cultural Workshop in Kawagoe —
“I’m looking for a unique Japanese cultural experience.”
“I want to create a souvenir that I can actually keep.”
If that sounds like you, the Samurai Sandal Making Experience is the perfect activity.
The workshop takes place in Kawagoe, a historic castle town filled with traditional charm.
While learning about Japan’s traditional footwear culture, you will enjoy a special hands-on experience creating your own original pair of sandals.
Once finished, you can take your handmade sandals home with you.
They make a wonderful travel memory and a unique item you’ll be proud to share with friends and family.
What Are Samurai Sandals?
Samurai Sandals are original footwear inspired by traditional Japanese zori sandals.
In the past, Japanese people commonly wore footwear made from natural materials such as rice straw and cloth.
In this workshop, we use modern materials that resemble rice straw (plastic rope designed to look like traditional straw) while preserving the traditional crafting techniques.
This allows the sandals to be:
✔ Completed in one day
✔ Easy to take home internationally
✔ Beginner-friendly
You will also experience the spirit of Japan’s unique “Mottainai” culture — the idea of respecting materials and avoiding waste.
Workshop Flow (Approx. 2 Hours)
1. Learn About Japanese Footwear Culture
The workshop begins with a simple introduction to the history and cultural background of traditional Japanese footwear.
Why did people wear straw sandals?
What meanings did the materials have?
Understanding the story behind them makes the crafting experience even more meaningful.
2.Sandal Making Demonstration
Next, we will carefully explain how to make the sandals.
The process is unique — you place rope around your toes and weave it together to form the base of the sandal.
Creating the base takes about 25–30 minutes per foot.
3. Create Your Own Sandals
Attach the straps, adjust the sole, and your sandals are complete.
Even beginners can comfortably finish the process.
4.Try Them On & Take Photos
After finishing, you can try walking in your new sandals.
You can also take photos while wearing a traditional jacket for a fun “samurai-style” photo opportunity — perfect for sharing on social media.
